The Whitfield Remembrance Project is affiliated with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Montgomery, Alabama. EJI is dedicated to challenging racial and economic injustice in the United States. Their mission focuses on providing legal representation to prisoners who have been denied fair trials, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities, and addressing systemic issues such as mass incarceration, the death penalty, and racial discrimination. EJI also works to educate the public about the history of racial injustice and seeks to promote social change through litigation, advocacy, and public education.

In 2018, the Equal Justice Initiative opened the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice as a part of their national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today.
